Burgers & Steaks Poultry Lamb Fish Pork Beef (Roasts & Loins)

GREEK-STYLE HAMBURGERS

This Mediterranean-style burger is great with beef or ground lamb, and the pita pockets are a nice change from buns. Both the olives and the feta cheese supply plenty of salt, so you may want to use it sparingly. Preparation time: 20 minutes. Cooking time: 16 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients

1 pound lean ground beef or lamb
1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese
1/2 cup kalamata or other black olives, finely chopped
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
8 ounces nonfat plain yogurt
1 clove garlic, pressed
2 tablespoons fresh chopped mint
4   pita breads, top fourth cut off
1 medium tomato, thinly sliced
1   green or yellow bell pepper, seeded and cut in rings
1 small purple onion, thinly sliced

Preparation
  1. Preheat a charcoal or gas grill.
  2. In a large bowl, mix ground meat, cheese and olives. Season with salt and pepper. Shape into 4 thick patties.
  3. In a small bowl, mix yogurt, garlic and mint. Set aside.
  4. Grill the burgers over the hot grill about 5 inches above coals, about 5 to 8 minutes on each side, turning once.
  5. Use the Cook'd Right® Sensor to check doneness of patties. Quickly insert dark sensor tip into center of meat. Wait 5-10 seconds. Remove sensor tip and check color. Continue checking with the same sensor until done.
  6. To serve, place each cooked patty inside a pita pocket along with tomatoes, pepper rings, onions and a generous dollop of yogurt sauce.
