For Consumers:

  1. What is a Cook'd Right Sensor? How does it work?
  2. The Cook'd Right Sensors are disposable probes that accurately
    indicate when meats and poultry have been properly prepared. The
    Cook'd Right Sensors utilize a vivid color change that will clearly let the
    consumer know exactly when their meat item has reached its desired
    endpoint temperature.

  3. What is a Pop-Up® Timer? How does it work?
  4. The Pop-Up® Timer is the most recognized means of determining the
    doneness of meats in the world today…when it pops, your meat is done.

  5. Why do I need a Cook'd Right Sensor or Pop-Up® Timer?

    I can usually tell by the color of the meat if it is done.

  6. Both the USDA and FDA now recommend that consumers gauge the
    doneness of their meats only by temperature. The USDA announced last
    year that the doneness of meats cannot be gauged by color alone - it's
    simply not a reliable method of determining doneness, especially when
    your health is an issue. Products like Cook'd Right Sensors and the
    Pop-Up® Timer are the easiest and most accurate way for any cook to
    properly determine when meats have reached the safe end-point
    temperature.


  7. What other products besides the Pop-Up® Timer would I recognize in a
    grocery store?
  8. Volk Enterprises, Inc. manufactures many other value-added products that
    consumers see in the grocery store every single day. Most turkeys that
    consumers purchase are produced and sold using either our metal Hok-
    Lok® or our nylon Handi-Clamp® trussing devices. Both of these items

  9. How can usage of Volk products like the Pop-Up® Timer or Cook'd Right
    Sensor contribute to kitchen and food safety?
  10. With food safety concerns at an all-time high, it has become very clear that
    the only true way for consumers to assure themselves a safe product is to
    cook meats to safe minimum temperatures. Both the Cook'd Right
    Sensors and Pop-Up® Timer are the quickest, easiest way to accurately
    measure doneness in meat products.

     

  11. How will I recognize if meat products are equipped with Volk products like
    the Pop-Up® Timer or Cook'd Right Sensor?
  12. Products that come equipped with either the Pop-Up® Timer or the
    Cook'd Right Sensors will typically have some indication directly on the
    package. If a product cannot be found with one of these items included in
    the package, please feel free to have your store's meat manager check for
    you.

  13. I've seen the Pop-Up® Timer in turkeys, but do any other meat products
    come equipped with them?
  14. While Pop-Up® Timers have been used in turkeys for more than 25
    years, many other products do have the timers in them as well. In fact,
    there are Pop-Up® Timers available for just about any cut of meat, like
    pork, beef, lamb, poultry, and fish.

  15. How do I know if I’m using the Cook'd Right Sensor properly?
  16. The Cook'd Right Sensors are extremely easy to use. In fact, all
    sensors are available with very clear, concise instructions.

  17. Are the Cook'd Right Sensors and Pop-Up® Timers accurate? Can I rely
    on them every time?
  18. The Pop-Up® Timers are extremely accurate. In fact, all of Volk's Pop-
    Up
    ® Timers are accurate to a minimum standard of
    + or - 2F

  19. Why would I use the sensors or timers instead of a typical meat
    thermometer?
  20. Most consumers rely on the Pop-Up® Timer and Cook'd Right Sensor
    because they are easier to use and understand. When using a

    conventional meat thermometer, consumers must always be concerned
    about it being calibrated accurately, placed in the right spot, and most
    importantly, they must also know what temperature a particular meat item
    is supposed to be cooked to. With both the Pop-Up
    ® Timer and Cook'd
    Right Sensor, there is no need for the consumer to worry about
    calibration or the specific endpoint temperature, because both tasks have
    already been done for them. In fact, with the Pop-Up
    ® Timer, placement
    in the meat is not an issue, because it is already inserted when the meat is
    purchased.

  21. The Cook'd Right Sensor seems ideal for hamburgers, but can I use it
    on other types and cuts of meat?
  22. The Cook'd Right Sensor is ideal for any cut of meat ranging from
    hamburgers to roasts. They are especially great for items that are cooked
    on the grill, like steaks, breast fillets, hamburgers, chops, etc.

  23. Will the sensor work even if I’m grilling? What about the timers?
  24. The Cook'd Right Sensor works wonderfully for grilled meats, though it
    must not be exposed to open flame. Pop-Up
    ® Timers can also be used
    when grilling some thicker cuts of meat such as mignons or items like
    salmon steaks.

  25. Are Volk products like the sensors and timers packaged with meat or
  26. separately?
  27. While the Cook'd Right Sensors and Pop-Up® Timers can
    be
    purchased separately from the meat, most premium meats have
    chosen to add value to their product by including one of these items
    directly in the packaging. If your favorite product does not have one
    included, please feel free to contact your store manager about which
    products do.

  28. What are the risks of not using a meat thermometer (Pop-Up® Timer,
    Cook'd Right Sensor, Vue-Temp® Timer) during the cooking process?

It is highly recommended that all consumers use some kind of temperature
indicator to accurately measure the doneness of their meat items. In fact, the
only way to truly assure that meals are prepared safely is to cook them to safe
temperature levels. The Pop-Up® Timers and Cook'd Right Sensors are
the easiest and most accurate way for any consumer to meet this standard.
